Stabilized Ancient Bog Oak Block

This block is cut from ancient bog oak sourced in Ukraine, radiocarbon dated to approximately 6,450 years old. Long ago, an oak tree was likely carried away by floodwaters and became buried deep within river sediment, where it remained preserved for millennia. Over thousands of years, the wood absorbed minerals from the surrounding soil, gradually transforming its color to the deep, rich black characteristic of the best ancient bog oak.

The knife in the photo gives an example of how good this wood looks used as handle material. JS Greg Shahan made this knife for me about 10 years ago.

Professionally stabilized by K&G Stabilizing Services, this piece has been fully impregnated under high pressure with a proprietary resin, then heat-cured to create a solid, durable structure throughout the wood. The stabilization process dramatically enhances strength and stability, reducing the risk of cracking, warping, or discoloration. It also allows for an exceptionally smooth, high-gloss finish—bringing out both the history and natural beauty of this rare material.
